“Breaking down complex data in a way that is digestible and actionable can be a challenge. Clear Climate Strategies supported our work by not only doing that, but also working with us to develop data-driven steps we could take to help our communities navigate the impacts of greenhouse gases in our area.”
Sarah Martik, Executive Director, Center for Coalfield Justice
“It was wonderful to collaborate with Franklin and Clear Climate Strategies. Franklin is a highly knowledgeable, methodical, and clear-minded applied scientist. He is an excellent communicator and has the ability to talk about complex scientific material in a way that a broad audience can understand.”
Dr. Claire Jantz, Deputy Secretary, Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources
“Clear Climate Strategies was essential in the completion of our Climate Action Plan. Franklin provided skilled and consistent leadership throughout the process. His knowledge and expertise led us through the multitude of information and complexities of climate change, to the completion of an achievable 10-year science-based plan. “
Lois Schultz, Sustainability Coordinator, INTERIORS HOME
“Clear Climate Strategies and RegenAll provided the City of Lancaster critical community outreach services on climate issues, which contributed to the City’s new Comprehensive Plan, Our Future Lancaster. We are thrilled to have this expertise in our local community and look forward to future partnerships.”
Douglas Smith, Chief Planner, City of Lancaster
Farmland and Forest in the Delaware River Basin
The William Penn Foundation supports critical conservation and restoration work for water quality throughout the Delaware River Basin. As part of a strategic planning process, William Penn Foundation wanted to better understand how the farmland and forests they help steward for water quality might also be managed for climate mitigation goals.
Clear Climate Strategies worked with Shippensburg University and University of Pennsylvania to develop a greenhouse gas inventory for the Delaware River Basin. Our project included an assessment of the carbon removal potential of the region’s farmland and forests using cutting-edge GIS modeling approaches.
We’ve used these data to help land trusts and other conservation organizations throughout the DRB better connect their important work to climate action. You can read the full report here or watch a webinar presentation here.
Climate Smart Furniture
Interiors Home is a locally owned home furnishings, accessories, and design service business, servicing Central Pennsylvania for over 54 years. The company’s mission is to create home interiors that enhance the lives of customers, team members, and community. Interiors Home places a high priority on sustainability and strives to make a positive impact on our community.
Clear Climate Strategies worked with Interiors Home in 2023 to develop an ambitious climate action plan for the business. The plan will reduce Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 85% 2033, through steps including renewable electricity purchases and electrification of its delivery vehicle fleet.
Since more than 90% of Interiors Homes emissions are embedded in their purchased goods (i.e. Scope 3), they are now working closely with their diverse network of suppliers to monitor and manage upstream emissions. They aim to reduce scope 3 emissions 30% by 2032.
Tackling Methane from Fossil Fuels
Center for Coalfield Justice works to improve environmental policy and public health for communities affected by the coal and fossil fuel industries. In 2022, CCJ began working on a sustainable economic development plan for Greene and Washington Counties in southwestern Pennsylvania, where coal and natural gas are major industries. They wanted to support this plan with accurate, up-to-date research on the climate impacts of fossil fuel extraction.
Clear Climate Strategies developed a comprehensive greenhouse gas inventory for Greene and Washington Counties. We took a deep dive into the latest research on fugitive methane emissions from coal and natural gas extraction and developed a library of emission factors from the peer-reviewed scientific literature.
CCJ is using these data to help motivate climate action and sustainable economic development in their communities.
Creation Care with Senior Communities
Landis Homes is a retirement community in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, that is rooted in the Mennonite faith, and stewardship of the environment is an important spiritual value for the organization.
In 2022, a group of residents passionate about “Creation Care” worked with the Landis Homes staff and leadership to commission the organization’s first-ever greenhouse gas inventory. Clear Climate Strategies completed a comprehensive Scope 1, 2, and 3 inventory of the organization, including a detailed look at upstream emissions involved in food service and health care expenses. We also estimated annual carbon sequestration from the gardens, woodlands, and farm fields on the 114-acre campus.
The inventory has been used to motivate climate action in the organization, including a commitment to purchasing 70% or more of electricity from renewable sources.
Envisioning More Sustainable Communities
Lancaster City, Pennsylvania is a thriving smaller city in southeastern Pennsylvania. Lancaster City has historically served as the processing and distribution hub for a county well-known for rich soils and farming communities. It is now also a regional center for education, healthcare, tourism, and hi-tech manufacturing.
In 2022, Lancaster City was revising its Comprehensive Plan (“Our Future Lancaster”), and city leaders wanted to integrate climate action and decarbonization ideas into the planning process. Clear Climate Strategies worked with RegenAll, a local climate NGO, to help Lancaster City gather ideas from residents and stakeholders on climate action in their communities.
We led a series of collaborative listening-sessions in 2022 to help stakeholders think through benefits and tradeoffs from climate action proposals affecting transportation, buildings, and green space. We coordinated on-line and in-person meetings – including bilingual English and Spanish meetings – that engaged 100 participants.
You can read more about these stakeholder sessions here, and see the final Our Future Lancaster plan here.
Sustainable Events and Tours
Nimblist is a “collection of shape shifting creatives”. They design incredible stage experiences and coordinate logistics for some of the biggest acts performing today. They are also as passionate about sustainability as they are about designing shows.
Clear Climate Strategies helped Nimblist chart its first science-alligned Climate Action Plan in 2023. The plan included a close look at emissions from remote offices for their team, as well as their travel and business expense emissions. Nimblist is supporting its staff and contractors to make energy-efficiency upgrades for their home offices and buying verified carbon offsets for travel emissions that it can’t yet address (sometimes air travel is unavoidable in the events business….).
Nimblist is taking a wider view on climate action, recognizing that clients using their designs and show plans take on significant emissions through travel, set and equipment fabrication, and venues. These emissions don’t typically show up on Nimblist’s greenhouse gas accounting books. They are now working to manage downstream scope 3 (or even scope 4!) emissions and offering sustainable event services for interested clients.
